SURFERS will gather at Merewether Beach this morning to farewell surfing legend Robbie Wood.

Mr Wood, formerly based at Merewether, died at home in Queensland on Sunday, aged 62, after a long illness.

He was surrounded by his family, including daughter and former Bardot singer Tiffani Wood, who was said to have sung to her father before he died.

Mark Richards, godfather to Mr Wood's son and former pro-surfer Nicky Wood, will lead the group.

They will form a circle in the water in memory of Mr Wood, who represented both Merewether and Dixon Park surf lifesaving clubs.
